British Authenticity Reading

With its rich traditions and cultural heritage, Britain is a popular location for fiction both on screen with TV series like Downton Abbey and Bridgerton and in books in genres such as Regency romance and mystery. However, for non-British authors setting books in the UK, no matter how much careful research is done, it can be really hard to ensure that all the details of British life, language, and culture are accurate.

If you’re not British and your mystery, romance, or inspirational fiction story, takes place in the UK, I would love to help you make your novel, whether historical or contemporary, as authentic as possible. I’ll give you advice on vocabulary, names, geography, food and drink, nature, culture, forms of address, and anything else that you may wish or need to know.

(Please note: I am actually English and have lived in England all my life. My knowledge of Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, therefore, is limited to aspects which are common to all parts of the British Isles.)

“Heather is fantastic! I’ve yet to find a missed typo after she’s finished proofreading, she’s always reliable and on schedule, and her feedback is always constructive. My writing has improved after working with Heather. I appreciate her British English advice, her etymological knowledge, and am incredibly grateful for every anachronism she’s helped me avoid! I could not recommend Heather more!”
