Proofreading

Proofreading is the final stage of the book-editing process and is about removing any minor errors that have slipped through the net. The earlier phases of editing deal with the big picture and ensure that the major elements are in place. Proofreading is like giving your book its final polish before it’s launched into the world. It covers issues such as eradicating duplicate words, adding those that are missing, correcting spelling mistakes and misused homonyms, tweaking punctuation, and ensuring that there is consistency throughout the manuscript. It’s also about checking for anachronistic words and phrases if a book is not set in the contemporary period.

My goal is to help you perfect your novel, whether it’s a cozy mystery, a sweet romance, or inspirational fiction, giving your readers a smooth reading experience so they can enjoy the story you’ve created without distraction. I work with both US and UK English.

To see if we could be a good fit as author and proofreader, I will complete a free 1,000-word sample proofread for you. You can then see if the way I work is what you’re looking for, and I can provide you with a personalised quote.

Pricing: From £9.00 GBP, $11.00 USD, $15.00 CAD per 1,000 words

“I have had the pleasure of working with Heather for over eight years and she is an invaluable part of my editorial team. I appreciate her warmth, humour and attention to detail, and I know that I can always rely on her “eagle eyes” to catch crucial errors in the manuscript. She’s also a wonderful “team member”, always ready to help and support in any way she can – whether that is discussing plot issues at length, researching obscure story facts or adjusting her schedule to fit unexpected changes in my publishing timeline. I feel very lucky to have found her!”
